Welcome to the beautiful island of kaua’i

In 2023, The Flying Horse Foundation expanded to the beautiful island of Kaua’i. Kaua’i’s breathtaking beauty often conceals the significant unmet needs of its children and youth. Our team operates in two locations on the north and south sides of the island, led by Dr. Marie Terry-Bivens, a psychologist and 25-year Kaua’i resident. The Flying Horse Foundation team is committed to investing in the lives of kama'aina keiki (local children) in need of healing and care. Through their interaction with the horses, children and youth work to expand their capacity for connection, awareness, resilience, empathy and self regulation.

Kaua’i values ohana (family) and community, and the Flying Horse Foundation is honored to contribute to strengthening both of these through our equine-assisted learning program. Currently in its start-up phase, Flying Horse Foundation Kaua’i serves up to 45 children per week during its year-round programming. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of David and Leslie Rita and Uncle Stu Hanchett, children can attend either of the two locations, allowing Flying Horse Foundation to reach even more families across the island.

While Hawaii is a popular travel destination, its unique customs, culture, and people make it a one-of-a-kind jewel in the Pacific. Flying Horse Foundation is honored to serve the children and youth of Kaua’i and looks forward to growing in capacity to serve many more in the years and decades to come!

The vision of the Flying Horse Foundation
is achieved in two primary ways:

  1. Assists at-risk and underserved children through Equine-Assisted Learning. This experience helps the children build a connection and learn to trust, which translates into life lessons they can build upon for their future.

  2. Our Senior Program serves residents who would enjoy getting out of the city to experience the open skies, fresh air and serenity of a beautiful 1,400 acre working cattle ranch.
